For the first meeting of the 2024-25 season, the Wichita Committee on Foreign Relations is pleased to announce a speaker who can provide insight into one of the most fascinating and divisive issues during this election campaign. The recent uproar in Springfield, Ohio, reveals the continued divisions related to the refugee and immigration question.

U.S. Department of State (ret.)

Topic: “From Congo to Wichita: How the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program Works”

Lawrence Bartlett served, until recently, as Director of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. During his tenure, the program has led the international community by resettling over 700,000 refugees for permanent settlement in the U.S. Prior to undertaking his role in the State Department in 2010, Bartlett served as U.S. Peace Corps Country Director in Jordan and Bulgaria. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Yemen, helping to implement its first national immunization program. He also served in Turkey as part of the Syria Transition Response Team. He is the recipient of the Warren Christopher Award for Outstanding Achievement in Global Affairs.
